There's Always Rosemary's

Via atrios, kids in the old hood are falling on hard times:

Luis Illades, an owner of the Urban Rustic Market and Cafe on North 12th Street, said he had seen a steady number of applicants, in their late 20s, who had never held paid jobs: They were interns at a modeling agency, for example, or worked at a college radio station. In some cases, applicants have stormed out of the market after hearing the job requirements.

"They say, ‘You want me to work eight hours?’ ” Mr. Illades said. "There is a bubble bursting."

Famed for its concentration of heavily subsidized 20-something residents — also nicknamed trust-funders or trustafarians — Williamsburg is showing signs of trouble. Parents whose money helped fuel one of the city’s most radical gentrifications in recent years have stopped buying their children new luxury condos, subsidizing rents and providing cash to spend at Bedford Avenue’s boutiques and coffee houses.

I think this is a definite upside for the recession. With any luck, the exodus of funded kids (specifcally girls) will crater the single-guys-in-finance demographic as well. ;)

For the rest, there will always be giant and (relatively) inexpensive styrofoam cups of Budweiser at Rosemaries.

This is also the herald of something else: The Hipster Hooker.

Considering the surprising scale of the hipster porn industry, this can’t be that far off. I’d venture to say that there are already plenty of hipster call girls.

For gender-balance, we should also observe that the Hipster Hustler is likely also already a staple on the streets.

Ahh… schadenfreude. It’s a wonderful thing.

In adjacent neighborhood news, dunno if the rumor has gotten to you yet. I’m moving to NYC, going full time at Sony, and spending the next month and a half in a sublet in Greenpoint and then from there… we’ll see. I hold you partly responsible for this, if it hadn’t been for your birthday I wouldn’t have gotten the idea to move. :P

Congratz on getting back into the center of the world. :)

Not to mention David Lynchian barkeeps and decor . . .
