A “wag” is a joker or funnyman.

Not to be confused with other Brit slang:

“WAG” (acronym): Wives and Girlfriends, particularly of football stars.

And

“wog” (racial slur): Derogatory term for dark-skinned people, later appropriated by Scientology to refer to non-Scientologists.
