Global Education Thread of the Day

By Outlandish Josh - Posted on 10 February 2009

So, tactical politics in the US is still depressing for me. I really can’t get it up to comment on the recent financial wrangling. I’m glad that the Big O seems to be getting his mojo working, but on the other hand his banker stooge is basically fascist (in the economic sense). It’s stressful and bothersome.

Overall, my take is pretty much guided by Krugthulu and Atrios. Read ‘em for the deets.

Increasingly my actual interest/passion here is global in scope — this is where my first video noodling ended up — as that seems to be where the revolution needs to go. Maybe it’s just my recent screening of the new Che film(s) (subdued, but pretty good) and plane tickets to Buenos Aires talking, but ultimately the challenges we really face are planetary in scale, and global problems have global solutions.

Aannyway, in that vein, and keeping with the cultural track that I think change proceeds along, I think the comment thread on this Entertainment Weekly post is just great. I’m a fan of M.I.A. on acoustic merits, but the way in which the represents a real global diaspora crossover is pretty great and you can’t beat this kind of subcontinent flamewar:

The Sri Lankans commenting here are defending their terrorist government,
who killed several journalists, Mp’s and HR workers etc etc.

If you let Osama sing rap music to people in the west, he will sing similar songs for the injustice of Muslims. She is the voice of global Terrorism and credit card scams.

All you losers remember one thing you needed a TAMIL to break the records in Cricket world…and NOW IN MUSIC Who else out of SRILANKA,,made it to the GRAMMY ONCE A PROUD TAMIL...

And it goes on like that. Terrorism, cricket and credit card scams. Oh yeah. Big world. Can’t always look inward.

yawl…rapture is on the doorstep…existentially compromised…
particularly education of women…raise the base up [hallelujah]

And the establishment of authority/power moves:

pushing up the shirt sleeve…re-adjusting the conductor hat…pinching the nose.

Nice performance piece.

Could this be your new day job? Have you totally ruled out beauty school, chippendale’s and a new extreme sport? lol

Love you,
-m
